Day 28: Hold On To Jesus

Faith relates us to Jesus. In the original languages of both Greek and Hebrew, faith is not primarily a doctrinal issue. It is a matter of character. We have it all wrong in our evangelical thinking. We tend to talk about faith as an intellectual embracing of certain doctrines. However, faith is primarily a matter of character.

Jesus said to His disciples, ‘You are those who have continued with Me in My trials’ (Luke 22:28). That is faith. It is continuing with Jesus. It is a personal commitment to a Person— Jesus.

Faith relates us to Jesus as our High Priest, as we confess that He is our Lord.

“Consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus.” (Hebrews 3:1)

Remember that very important fact. Jesus is the High Priest of your confession If you say it, He is your High Priest. If you keep silent, He cannot be your High Priest. That is why it is so important to confess your faith.

Hebrews 10 takes us one stage further:

“Having a High Priest over the house of God... Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering.” (Hebrews 10:21, 23)

We confess our faith and now we confess our hope. Why would it say that we must hold fast the profession of our faith? The reason is because there will be forces that will oppose us, pressures that will come against us, and circumstances designed to discourage us and undermine our faith. The life of faith is a battle of determination and endurance, and our obligation is to ‘not waver.’
