How many Christians are running with uncertainty, this way today, that way tomorrow. Paul says, “I’m not like that.” Nobody ever won a race who staggered from side to side and switched from one lane to another. Thus I fight, not as one who beats the air. He said, “When I’m in a boxing match,” he said, “I aim to land my blows on my opponent. I don’t just lash out into the air.” Then he says, “But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection.” You all watch the Olympic games. Every one of them had to exercise mental discipline, physical discipline and emotional discipline. They’re doing it just for a gold medal or a silver medal. We are in a race that’s going to give us an eternal prize. How much more ought we to exercise self-control?
