Sarah's life on the brutal streets of Nairobi was marked by despair and hopelessness. But her story didn’t end there, because God's Word promises, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9). Sarah's journey from darkness into light is this promise, lived out.
Surviving Street Life
Living on the fringes of society, Sarah’s life was a hard-hitting tale of survival. Born out of wedlock and abandoned to the chaos of the city, she quickly became acquainted with the harsh realities of street life. By 2018, she had fallen in with one of the most notorious gangs in Nairobi. Their existence was a grim cycle of hardship, violence, and survival.
Sarah’s initiation into the underworld was anything but glamorous. After experiencing a traumatic assault that left her pregnant, she struggled to provide for herself and her young daughter. Desperation led her to a life of crime. The gang offered a twisted sense of family and security in a world that had shown her little kindness. Sarah learned to navigate the dangerous waters of gang loyalty and street survival.
Out of the gang of eight, Sarah is the sole survivor who evaded both death and long-term imprisonment. The streets claimed her friends one by one, leaving a wake of destruction and shattered lives. She fled to the remote eastern side of Kenya, seeking anonymity and a semblance of peace in her self-imposed exile.
Every lesson seemed to pierce her heart, bringing her to tears
In this unlikely refuge, God’s intervention came through the Derek Prince Bible School, which found its way to a local church near Sarah’s hideout. Drawn by a need she couldn’t yet name, Sarah attended the classes. She remained silent about her past, but every lesson seemed to pierce her heart, bringing her to tears. Here cries were a sound of repentance. The teachings, especially Derek Prince’s Shaping History through Prayer and Fasting, struck a chord deep within her.
Salvation Story
Unable to bear the weight of her past any longer, Sarah sought out Geoffrey Auma, the East Africa Coordinator for Derek Prince Ministries as well as the director of the school. With tears streaming down her face, she confessed her history of crime and violence. Geoffrey recalls, “Sarah, full of tears in her eyes, managed to open up about the hidden life she lived. She humbled herself, confessing robbing and harming victims. From the look of things, she was very tired and really wanted deliverance and change. I ministered to her, and led her to salvation.”
Sarah’s transformation was nothing short of miraculous. In the past two years, she dedicated herself to studying God's Word through our Derek Prince Bible School, immersing herself in the teachings of Derek Prince. Recently, she completed her diploma in Gospel Ministries and has now embarked on her third year, focusing on Ministry Specialization and Evangelism.
Reflecting on her journey, Geoffrey shares, "I have witnessed Sarah’s transformation from the dark alleys of Nairobi to a life filled with the love and grace of our Lord Jesus. God is real, transformation is real, deliverance is real, and healing is real. Sarah’s life is a living testament to these truths."
