How do you begin your day? Do you jump out of bed, excited about what’s awaiting you? Or are you fearful and anxious about what today might bring? Derek Prince shares a personal, important key that helps you to live without fear. From the moment you wake up, until the evening comes, you can live fearless. How? By deliberately putting your trust in God’s Word.
Luke 1 records the prophecy of the father of John the Baptist, Zacharias, which is a kind of introduction to the Gospel dispensation of which John was to be the forerunner. Speaking about what is to come through the Messiah, as the fulfillment of God’s promises under the Old Covenant, Zacharias said:
“[God] spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets... that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us.” (Luke 1:70–71)
In Christ we experience this truth. We are “saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us.” Our overall enemy, Satan, and his angels are in the heavenlies. But our enemy at hand—the evil spirits that are personally present to harass and torment us—are the demons.
Christ delivered you from your enemies
Luke gives us further insight regarding how we are to operate to overcome evil:
“To grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve Him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life” (Luke 1:74–75)
Here is the resounding truth of these verses: you cannot serve God in holiness and righteousness all the days of your life until you have been delivered out of the hand of your enemies.
Deliverance from evil is essential to full service, and the enemies of whom the Scripture speaks here primarily are the evil spirits.
Living without fear - now
A person who is not fully delivered cannot serve without fear. This is true of multitudes of sincere Christians who are serving—but not without fear. Why? Because they have not been fully delivered from the torment and harassment of evil spirits.
God has provided deliverance to serve Him without fear in holiness and righteousness for our entire lives. This is not speaking of the next world. This is for us in this world—in this life now. We can have full deliverance from the harassment and oppression of all demon spirits.
I find very, very few Christians who serve without fear. The majority of Christians worry about what evil may befall them—some in the spiritual realm of accusation and torment, some in the physical realm of sickness, and some in the financial realm of poverty or frustration.
How to start your day
Personally, I find that almost every morning when I wake up, fear is waiting at the door to get in. If I do not immediately establish my place in Christ and begin to thank and praise God for who and what I am in Christ, I will not spend that day in complete liberty. A sort of nagging, tormenting fear will assail my mind.
When I look at myself in the mirror as I am shaving I say, “Thank You, Jesus. You took my infirmities. You bore my sicknesses, and with Your stripes I am healed.”
By the time I have said that three times, I am believing it. Every day, I must re-establish myself in my place in Christ. I do not know if this is true for everyone, but I think the way you begin the first five minutes of the day is usually decisive as to how you will spend the rest of the day. I am not talking about spending hours in prayer; it is simply reminding yourself who you are and where you are in Christ. You remind yourself of what Christ has done to the devil and the fact that the devil has no right of access to you. You and I can serve Jesus without fear, having been delivered from the hands of our enemies.
